Ming dynasty Fahua ceramic Persian market vase
Item # 5602

This Fahua vase measures 12 and three quarter inches high and 7 and one half inches at the widest part. The "fahua" style of ceramics was produced in China from the 14th to the 16th centuries. It may well have been intended as a less expensive substitute for cloisonné enamels.. The origin of the term "fahua" is uncertain but it may mean "Buddhist decoration" and derive from the fact that these wares were very often used in Buddhist temples. The Ming dynasty. This vase has been drilled for use as a lamp. No cracks, chips or repairs. The high fired glaze on this stoneware piece does have some minor fading from the sun.

Chinese mother of pearl brooch inlaid with jade, lapis, and turquoise. Measures 2 and one quarter inches wide by 1 and one quarter inches high. This brooch or pin is one of 3 similar pieces. Originally, they were mounted to a 3 piece vanity set. The set was made to custom order by the Gorham Silver Company, circa 1880. In the late 1970's, the 3 MOP panels were removed and made into a brooches by adding sterling silver backs and pins. The gold vermeil frames are original. The MOP panels were made in China by artisians, then sent to Gorham for setting. The scene in this brooch depicts a lady holding a fan, lounging in her pagoda teahouse, viewing the river and hills.
